Can I measure a target I did not print?
Yes. On a LogBook sheet the scale, the aim point and the distance all come from the codes printed in the four corners, so there is nothing to set before you start marking. On any other target you set the scale by marking a known length, with presets for 1, 2, 4 and 6 inches and for 25 to 150 mm, and you mark the aim point yourself. The aim point is the step that turns a group into a scope correction, so it is the one worth not skipping.
My printed sheet measures wrong
Turn off Scale to fit in the print dialog. A sheet scaled to the paper has geometry that no longer matches its corner codes, and every reading taken from it inherits the error.
Then measure the ruler bar printed along the foot of the sheet and type what it actually measures into Settings. Every later reading is corrected for your printer. You only have to do this once per printer, and Settings shows whether a correction is in use.
Two rounds went through one hole
Two rounds through the same hole leave one hole, and no photograph can show it. Tap how many rounds you fired under Rounds in This Group and the screen keeps a tally, so marking four when you fired five says so. What to do about the missing round is yours: it may have gone through a hole you have already marked, or missed the paper.
Placing the marks accurately
You place every shot yourself. A crosshair sits fixed in the middle of the window and the photo moves under it, so nothing is ever hidden under your fingertip, and the mark goes exactly where the crosshair is. Zoom in and take your time: nothing moves it afterwards. Put the crosshair on a shot already marked and the button becomes Move or Remove.
Settings, under Marking Shots, offers centring, which pulls each mark onto the middle of the hole beneath the crosshair. It is off by default and it is there for putting a rough group down quickly. The crosshair at 4× is more precise than the app's guess at where a hole's middle is, so it is not the way to measure carefully, and it never acts at 2× or more.
A measurement still looks wrong
Send the original photograph rather than a screenshot of it, a screenshot of what the app reported, the distance and caliber, and your iPhone and LogBook versions. The original carries the detail the app worked from; a screenshot of it does not.
Is there an account, and where does my data live?
There is no account and no password. iCloud sync is optional, and without it everything stays on the one device. There is no Pennanti server for it to go to. The privacy policy sets out what is stored and what is not.
Is LogBook a subscription?
LogBook is free for one firearm and one load work-up, with every feature and unlimited loads. LogBook Pro removes both limits for $19.99 a year (US), billed through your Apple Account; cancel any time in your Apple Account settings. Nothing you log is ever deleted, and you can always export it.
Can I get everything back out?
Export one firearm's session or maintenance log as a CSV, or the whole logbook as a zip of seven spreadsheets with every target photo and a Read Me explaining the files. Export is free and nothing is held back behind Pro.
The whole-logbook export contains serial numbers. Its Read Me says so, and it is worth remembering before sending one anywhere.
What do I need?
- An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later.
- A printer or a print shop, if you want LogBook's own target sheets. You can measure targets you did not print without one.
- iCloud is optional. Without it, everything stays on one device.
- No account and no password.
It is not on the App Store yet
LogBook is in development. Write to info@pennanti.com and you will hear when it reaches the App Store.
